Researches on the adoption of affirmative action policies in higher education in Brazil are recent. On the other hand, studies on access and retention of students from lower classes at this level of education begin to emerge from 1990 and endorse the research experience of students. The aim of this paper is to discuss the university experience of students entering USP through Inclusp (USP Social Inclusion Program), emphasizing its subjective dimensions. For this, are presents interviews with six students on courses most and less competitive. The paper discusses the way by which the USP appears on the horizon of possibilities and the difficulties arising from social inequality, pointing to the importance of considering the subjective dimension in research and formulation of affirmative action policies.
