The general objective of this work is to contribute to the teaching of the perfect aspect in the ELT world, especially when it comes to the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) context. The specific objective is to evaluate an activity related to the perfect aspect, taking into consideration the UP and
the EP associated with the present tense. This study is aimed at answering the following questions: (a) how does the understanding of aspect contribute to the development of the linguistic competence of learners of EFL? and (b) which strategies are to be employed in the classroom to define the perfect aspect? The methodology employed consists in the analysis of an activity designed for intermediate
learners of EFL. The results indicate it is fruitful to introduce this structure to EFL learners via paraphrasing exercises and syntactic and semantic analysis.
