The present article examines the book Juicio Critico del Bosquejo Historico de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay por el Dr. D. Francisco A. Berra, written by Carlos Maria Ramirez and the role of the author in the construction of the idealized image of Jose Artigas. Published in 1882, a period characterized by the intense debate about Uruguayan past, this work participated in the image rehabilitation process of the independentist leader, characterizing him as a great Uruguayan Nationality Precursor and libertarian.Downloads
