Italian immigration to Brazil after World War II (1946-1976)

Abstract

This article aims to focus on the phenomenon of Italian immigration to Brazil in the years following the end of the Second World War (1946-1976). It is worth remembering that in Italy in the immediate post-war period, in a context that was liberal politically but strongly adverse economically and socially after the military defeat, migration increased substantially. The text discusses the nuances of this latest Italian immigration into Brazilian territory, as well as highlighting the importance of government agreements between Brazil and Italy, which promoted and organized specific legislation to encourage the mobility of new migrants from the peninsula. Finally, the characteristics that marked Italian migration in this new migratory context are pointed out.

Author Biographies

Antonio de Ruggiero, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Adjunct Professor in the Postgraduate Program in History at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGH/PUCRS) and Lecturer in the Undergraduate History Course (subjects taught: Contemporary History; Theory and Historiography; History of Monarchical Brazil). He holds a Post-Doctorate (PNPD/CAPES program) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (2013-2016) and a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from the Università degli Studi di Firenze – Italy (2011). He graduated in History from the same university. His studies focus on Italian political history (19th and 20th centuries) and socioeconomic history. He develops and guides research on the history of Italian immigration in Brazil, with a particular focus on aspects of transnationalism; multiculturalism; skilled and business immigration; immigration and urbanization; political immigration; and ethnic press. He coordinates the international project Capes/Print Migrations: Historical-Conceptual Perspectives and Analysis of Contemporary Phenomena (Brazil, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, France); collaborates with the research group TRANSFOPRESS Brazil - Study Group on the Press and Foreign Language in Brazil (CNPq) at Unesp. He is a member of the International Association AREIA (Audioarchivio delle migrazioni tra Europa e América Latina - Università di Genova - Italy) and ABHO (Brazilian Association of Oral History); a researcher in the International Network for the Study of Italian Language, History and Culture, which involves the Universities of Nantes (France), Calabria (Italy), Groeningen (Netherlands) and PUCRS (Brazil); and a founding member of the Associazione dei Ricercatori Italiani in Brasile (ARIB).

Leonardo de Oliveira Conedera, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Doctor of History from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). He was a PNPD/Capes scholarship recipient in the Postgraduate Program in History at the State University of Santa Catarina. He has experience in the field of History, with an emphasis on the History of Republican Brazil, mainly dedicating himself to the following themes: Italian immigration, urban immigration, memory and identity, and Oral History. In recent years, his research has emphasized issues related to skilled migration, orality, and migration in the present time. Advisor to the Committee of Italians Abroad of Rio Grande do Sul (COMITES-RS) 2022-2026 term.
