Territories and Frontiers in the agronomic conquest of Brazilian Cerrado

Brazilian agriculture transformed and established a new production rhythm in the 1970s, with the creation of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA). The Brazilian Cerrado was inserted in this context of agricultural modernization, presenting social, environmental, and economic changes. This paper investigates the impacts of research and expansion of agriculture in the Cerrado, particularly in the state of Goiás, from the 1970s onwards. The development of adapted varieties mainly of soybeans and corn and the discovery of the agricultural potential of the Brazilian tropical savanna changed the agricultural scenario of the region, transforming what was previously understood as subsistence agriculture into one of the largest producers of grains and agricultural commodities worldwide. We argue that agronomic development, associated with scientific advances in the ecology of the Cerrado, generated advances in the production of grains and commodities, impacting infrastructure, land value and the generation of wealth for the region. At the same time, the conquest of the Cerrado's soils also promotes changes in the landscapes and impacts the establishment of new environmental policies for the region.
