Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, thousands of people left Italy and settled in Rio Grande do Sul, more precisely in the Quarta Colônia, seeking better living conditions. One hundred years later, communities of descendants celebrated the centenary of the arrival of their ancestors, taking stock of the contributions left by Italian immigrants in the State. And in 2025, how will 150 years of Italian immigration in Rio Grande do Sul be celebrated? Based on this question, the present work is interested in understanding the constructions of the memory of Italian immigration from the perspective of the act of celebrating. To this end, works that work with the theme will be analyzed, relating Italian immigration to Rio Grande do Sul, as well as the records produced by and for it. The festive events of a centenary or one hundred and fiftieth are important moments in the construction of a collective memory in relation to Italian immigration in RS.

Author Biography

Juliana Maria Manfio, History teacher in the municipal public school system of Cachoeira do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

History teacher in the municipal public school system of Cachoeira do Sul (RS). PhD in History from the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (2019). Holds a Master's degree in History from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2015) and a Bachelor's degree in History from the Franciscan University (2013). In 2022, she received an honorable mention in the Fourth Sandra Jatahy Pesavento Thesis Award in Cultural History. In 2025, she received the “Premio per Saggi Scientifici, Brevi, Inediti e Originali Sulla Storia dell’Emigrazione Veneta – 3a edizione” (Award for Scientific, Short, Unpublished and Original Essays on the History of Venetian Emigration – 3rd edition).
