Anticomunism diplomacy: the influence of the Getulio Vargas government in the cease of diplomatic relations of Uruguay with the USSR in December, 1935

Abstract

On November 1935, when the ANL revolutionary movements took place, the Vargas regime argued that revolutionaries had been helped by the Soviet Legation in Montevideo. Although Itamaraty could not prove that such intervention had taken place, Terra’s government severed diplomatic relations between Uruguay and the Soviet Union, demonstrating not only the effectiveness of “anticommunism diplomacy”, but the importance of Uruguay's relationship with its powerful neighbor, Brazil.
