This text was delivered at the Closing Conference of the International Congress os AHILA, held in Paris, in august 2021, by remote means. It reflects on the trajectory of concept of populism, using the historiographical debates that took place in Brazil, especially from the 1970s onwards, as a basis. The author´s critical position, highlighted in previus works, is resumed under the stimulus of thinking about the so-called neopopulisms, in the case of Brazil, the Bolsonaro misgovernment. It is argued that, if as a concept, populism is not theoretically or empirically sustainable, as a category of accusation it has and will have wide circulation.
