This essay, an analysis of autobiographies written by Italian immigrants to Argentine and Brazil, focuses in particular on the unique character of migration, which is customarily defined as a mass phenomenon, underrating the fact that every migrant takes an autonomous decision, influenced by his hopes and fears about the future before and during his passage to the New World.
