Immigration and urbanization in Cuba in the first third of the XX century

Abstract

In this text we study how the shaping of the socio-productive structure of Cuba and its influence on migratory flows played an important role in the urbanization process which took place on the island in the first third of the 20th century. As we know, the Cuban population was formed by the sucessive colonizations of different rates (the black, the white, the Chinese), which took place from the beginning of the century in accordance with the needs of its economic evolution – with a progressive productive specialization – wich brought about a process of urbanization, that in turn consolidated peasant land ownership on small scale dedicated to satisfy the urban market.
