Oliveira Lima’s work is analyzed, emphasizing his search for new models of political elite for Latin America, which could substitute the caudillos. Lima found a model in George Washington's veneration in the United States, where the local republican tradition valued harmonic and virtuous political personalities, differently from the charismatic Latin American leaderships.
