Teófilo Otoni was one of the most important politicians in Brazil of the 19th century. He took part in several decisive political events, always driven by the republican ideal. Otoni’s political course has been remembered by its coherence and integrity. However, the ambiguity of his practices showed up tensions that were characteristics of the Brazilian liberal of the 1800s.
