The current context of the internationalization of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has encouraged the adoption of policies aimed at expanding scientific visibility and integration into international academic networks. At The Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), this movement led to the formulation of two guiding documents: the Institutional Development Plan (PDI), published in 2016, and the Institutional Internationalization Plan (PII), published in 2018. Both emphasize the need to broaden the circulation of knowledge produced within the university, with a focus on scientific publication, particularly in English. This article aims to analyze the discourses on internationalization present in these institutional documents, as well as in the websites of scientific journals linked to UFSM. The research, qualitative and documentary in nature, is grounded in Applied Linguistics and Critical Genre Analysis, also drawing on studies of language policies and academic literacies. The results indicate that the centrality attributed to the English language in both documents and editorial guidelines is associated with the pursuit of visibility and international prestige. However, tensions emerge between institutional objectives and the material and human conditions of editorial teams. It is concluded that the internationalization of science requires not only political and linguistic actions, but also technical support and appropriate training so that publication in English becomes a bridge rather than a barrier to the sharing of knowledge.
