Abstract

This article seeks to understand and analyze autobiographical aspects in the poem Mother and Daughter, written by Anne Sexton (1928–1974), an American who established herself as one of the main voices of confessional poetry in the 20th century. In a contemporary context, we can consider the pertinence of this work extremely significant: in the era of autobiography, the first person singular and the lack of privacy emerge as they once did in the era of confessional poetry. We will use studies by Philippe Lejeune (2008), Manuel Alberca (2007), Dominique Combe (2010), Michel Collot (2018) and Mariana Soletti da Silva (2021), as well as the biography of Anne Sexton, written by Diane Wood Middlebrook (1994), the complete collection of poems by Sexton, published in 1999, other texts that deal specifically with the author, confessional poetry, and issues pertinent to the analysis of the poem.
