Times and spaces of female teaching: representations on teachers in childhood education
Keywords:
teaching, representations on teachers, childhood educationAbstract
This paper problematizes the representations on teachers in childhood education in the city of Pelotas/RS, between the 1940s and 1960s, expressed in the documents of the first private or public institutions which had vacancies for children. In the researched document sources, the representations of the teacher are coupled up with the religious discourse (Catholic), when the vocation and the mission of such professional are highlighted. Among the representations, we would like to mention the different ways of being a teacher: the teacher is someone to correct a child’s “defect” as well as his/her family, the teacher as a health educator and good fairy. At the same time in which the childhood educator is thought to be something inherent from the female gender, a continuous professionalization is demanded. Such representations intertwine and are mixed to each other, playing, an important role to guide the teachers, the children and the families, establishing, somehow, the inseparability between teaching and motherhood.
