The future of education in Brazil in the face of climate change

Abstract

Education is one of the area’s most frequently affected by extreme weather events. In the year in which Brazil will host COP30, which will be held in the Amazon, we seek to foster discussion on the impacts of extreme weather events on education. As a basis for the debate, we present the results of a survey conducted with students, teachers and school administrators from all over the country, between August and September 2024. It was concluded that there is still a need for much and faster progress not only in adapting school infrastructures to extreme weather events, in creating protocols and emergency plans, but also in providing psychosocial support to the entire school community that suffers from the effects of climate change.

Bachelor's and Licentiate degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Specialist in Gender Studies from the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). Master's degree in Education from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS), with doctoral studies at the Université Paris Descartes – Sorbonne. Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Brasília (UnB). Was a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education.
