This paper aims to provide an analysis about the use of the Cuban literacy method Yes, I can, in a settlement of the Brazilian Landlees Movement. The data are analyzed based on the new literacy studies that have been contributing to a redefinition of the concept of literacy. The ethnographic methodology is inspired by the new literacy studies (NLS). In addressing the "Yes I can", focusing on the role of teacher, we conclude that his mediation evidences a literacy practice based on NLS. Literacy as social practice, although not covered in the Yes I can method, could be realized in the fact that thought the teacher`s mediation, the students perceived writing as a social and cultural subject.
