Abstract

The author begins with a viewpoint of the present state of political democracy in many so-called advanced countries and the existent fragility regarding the experience of human rights. Following, the author presents and analyses some notions of democracy, placing emphasis on deliberative and communicative democracy, as well as to the conception of democracy as human rights. Based on this frame work, this paper’s last topic focuses on democracy in schools and the main guidelines for human rights education.

Carlos Alberto Vilar Estêvão, Instituto de Educação da Universidade do Minho

Professor Catedrático na Universidade do Minho. Publicou 47 artigos em revistas especializadas e 28 trabalhos em actas de eventos, possui 11 capítulos de livros e 11 livros publicados. Possui 30 itens de produção técnica. Participou em 23 eventos no estrangeiro e 38 em Portugal. Recebeu 3 prémios e/ou homenagens. Nas suas actividades profissionais interagiu com 14 colaboradores em co-autorias de trabalhos científicos.
