Abstract

: In this presentation for the edited section “Religion and the Economy: genealogies, borders, and thresholds”, we emphasize the interdependent nature of the epistemological (representation) and political (regulation) aspects of the relationship between the religious and the economic in secularity. We critically evaluate some of the available approaches to this topic in the social sciences and humanities, and we highlight the features that give the articles in this volume a distinctive family resemblance: their refusal to assume aprioristic definitions of these fields; their engagement, via ethnographic theory, with theological-economic traces that testify to the historical entanglement of religion and economics; and their emphasis on the moral economies of various religious traditions and how these are mobilized in practice through ethical projects of individual and collective self-formation.
