Abstract

This article aims to understand Michel Foucault’s place in a potential history of listening, based on his interpretation of the concept of parrhesía (παρρησία). To do so, we first seek to situate this complex concept within Classical Antiquity, before examining it in greater depth within Foucauldian studies. The analysis focuses mainly on works from the period known as “late Foucault”, in the first half of the 1980s, giving particular emphasis to his studies on confession and on parrhesía in the context of the epiméleia heautoû (ἐπιμήλεια ἑαυτοῦ), the ‘care of the self’. This article thus aims to present what could be called a prolegomenon to the study of ‘listening’, based on the concept of parrhesía in its Foucaultian interpretation.

Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Graduated in Letters (Portuguese and Greek) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), graduated in Letters (Portuguese and Vernacular Literatures) from UFRJ, Master's degree in Classical Letters from UFRJ (1994) and PhD in Classical Letters from UFRJ (1999). Professor in the Postgraduate Program in Literary Studies (PPGCL-UFRJ) and the Postgraduate Program in Philosophy at UFRJ (PPGF-UFRJ). He was president of the Brazilian Society for Classical Studies (2010-2011). Coordinator of the Program of Studies in Representations of Antiquity (Proaera).
