Abstract

What can I say when talking about mysticism and psychoanalysis? It is a problematic topic loaded with misconceptions, a kind of “infinite confusion” which involves less conscious dimensions of our psyche. The phenomenon involved is variable, and therefore; imprecise in defining this type of experience. What can be observed is the external aspect of the phenomenon that is visible; however, the non-visible that is interior because it is subjective and unrepeatable, and escapes analysis. Therefore, experience becomes the key to reading and understanding. For example, when we talk about love, those who have never loved cannot have an idea of love. Only those who have already fallen in love can understand the state of mind of a lover. The same can be said of a mystical experience. To speak of the mystical goes back to a vital necessity that has to do with the perception of the world as a limited totality of facts. This is because the reason that no thinker, be it a philosopher, theologian, psychoanalyst, or even a religious person, has been able to decisively express the awareness of the reality to which he refers in his experience that transcends the representations he offers. The mystic reveals that in order to reach the Other, it is necessary to experience nothingness. It is a work of dispossession and of decentering oneself.

Evilázio Francisco Borges Teixeira, Doctor of Philosophy and Theology, psychoanalyst and full professor of the Graduate Program in Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS, 2017-2024), full professor of the Postgraduate Program of the School of Humanities (PUCRS). Graduated in Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (1996), in Philosophy from PUCRS (1997), Master's degree in Philosophy from PUCRS (1998) and in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University - Rome (2000), PhD in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University - Rome (2002) and in Philosophy from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. in Urbe - Roma (Angelicum) (2004), postgraduate in University Management and Leadership at the Institute of Management and Leadership (IGLU, 2007), internship at the University of Ottawa – Canada, graduated in Law from PUCRS (2016), Business and Professional English from Georgetown University – USA (2016). Clinical Psychoanalysis from the Brazilian Institute of Clinical Psychoanalysis (IBPC, 2022).
