Abstract

Katechon, an enigmatic figure who appears in Paul's letters, encompasses centuries of debate surrounding the relationship between theology and politics. It leads to a solid hermeneutical tradition in which it is understood as an established power that curbs anomie and chaos, thus placing theology as the foundation that maintains established political orders. But it can also be interpreted as that set of forces that still holds back the advent of the Day of the Lord, the parousia. In this perspective, consolidated by the messianic tradition, there is no agreement or even any commitment to maintaining order. Rupture and catastrophe are possibilities for the destruction of an unjust world. This article aims to reconstruct, albeit briefly, the trajectory of this concept in contemporary theology and political philosophy, especially based on the writings of Paulo de Tarsus, Carl Schmitt, Jacob Taubes and Giorgio Agamben.
