The book The Castaway of Existence: Machado de Assis and Arthur Schopenhauer – Caricature, Parody, Tragedy, and Animal Ethics, by Jair Barboza, explores the influence of Schopenhauer on the works of Machado de Assis, proposing that the character Quincas Borba is a caricature of the German philosopher and his philosophy of humanitism, a parody of Schopenhauerian metaphysical pessimism. Barboza bases his analysis on bibliographic discoveries and examines works such as The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas and Quincas Borba to support his thesis. He also highlights the animal ethics in Machado, influenced by Schopenhauer, and how this approach was followed by other Brazilian authors. The book is intended for readers interested in the intersection between literature and philosophy.
