In this paper, we intend to show that Nietzsche’s projects for the Physiology of Art have significantly developed in his later work, starting with a more literary emphasis and culminating in “scientific” applications. The different ways of relating literary and scientific sources make the physiology of art a relevant approach for the late Nietzsche to criticize the modern artists of décadence and to create conditions for the evaluative project of affirmative art. Finally, we will investigate the limits of Nietzsche’s critique of modern décadence.
