Abstract

The essay's theme is unity in human multidimensionality from the understand of two contemporary thinkers, Max Scheler and Viktor Frankl. The writing explores the human situation as a unitas multiplex by articulating philosophical anthropology with dimensional ontology, philosophical projects of each of the thinkers, respectively. Our problem is: how to preserve anthropological unity without reducing the somatic, psychic and noetic dimensions to a single aspect? As we have presented, Frankl, based on Scheler's interpretation (for which the person is the irrefiable center of spiritual acts) will understand the human as capable of self-distancing and self-transcendence, through the “laws” of dimensional projection, intending to sustain the unifying role of the spiritual person. The contribution of this reinterpretation of Scheler, made by Frankl, is seen in the sense of a theoretical advance, insofar as the contradictions found when interpreting the human phenomenon arise from projections at lower levels, but are recomposed when viewed from the noetic level. We therefore conclude that Frankl has merit in also showing that freedom and responsibility emerge from the spiritual situation of openness to the world (Weltoffenheit), allowing for a non-reductionist interpretation of human suffering and the search for meaning. From the perspective of dimensional ontology, it is possible to understand, with Frankl, that the human is a real opening, resulting from his choices.
