When is a life and a death fully embedded in the Christian or the Muslim doctrine, and who should have the final word on such a fundamentally important question? In Christianity and Islam, martyrdom never appears as something independent, it is always placed in connection to bravery, love, courage and determination – and much more. The martyr is a specific “species,” a believer par excellence. What criteria must be met in order to speak of a martyr in Christianity and Islam? This is a question that is becoming more and more important due to various processes of radicalization in the world. The aim of this article is to show Christian and Muslim criteria of martyrdom in a compact way and to elaborate the interest of politics in martyrdom.
