Abstract

The central question of this paper is: is the tolerance a sufficient value in interreligious relationships in a society where there is religious diversity? To answer this, I begin by showing some everyday uses of such concept in order to elucidate some errors common to such uses. Then I present some philosophical defenses of this concept and I defend an idea of tolerance that I believe to be more reasonable. After that, I show how that concept is necessary and important for interreligious relations, despite being insufficient for such relations and may in fact to limit more fruitful relations between religions, especially concerned to public interest debates. At the end, I present a proposal for an interreligious relationship that goes beyond tolerance and promotes, in my view, a more fruitful interaction between different religions.
