Abstract

Taking as starting point Ann Beattie’s short novel “Learning to Fall”, this paper reflects upon the moral and the pedagogical possibilities open to literature from the critical and negative diagnosis concerning traditional moral philosophies’ failure to cope with the most vulnerable aspects of our humanity, emphasizing the importance of a slow and disciplined “learning to fall” by means of literary readings
and friendships.
