Aims: To analyze the prevalence of chronic pain in cancer patients, who were undergoing on treatment at the time of the research.
Methods: This observational epidemiological study, with a cross-sectional design, was carried out at the cancer treatment unit of the Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Tubarão, Santa Catarina. Patients with head and neck, lung and bronchial, breast, gastrointestinal tract, urogenital ang gynecological tumors were included, in follow up the treatment in SUS, from october 2021 to march 2022. At first opportunity, a self-administrated questionnaire was used, made by the authors, to verify the existence or not of chronic cancer pain. Subsequently, there was a search for data in the electronic medical records, in order to obtain the sociodemographic, pharmacological and clinical evolution data of patients.
Results: A total of 254 patients were interviewed in a follow-up for the cancer treatment. In general, there was a prevalence of chronic pain in 50,4% of the participants, an even higher number in woman, with 55,9%, (P=0.031). The most reported pain intensity was moderated, in 21% of the interviewees and the tumors most associated with chronic pain cancer were head and neck (77,8%) and lung and bronchial (61,9%). For pharmacological treatment 55,1% used noticed relief after use, with a high rate of NSAIs and strong opioids among the most used drugs. 37% resorted to the used of non-pharmacological treatments among the main ones were physiotherapy, massage and follow-up with a psychologist.
Conclusions: These findings of this study, indicate a high prevalence of chronic cancer pain in cancer patients, although there is an evolution in the treatment, both pharmacologically and non-pharmacologically in recent years. Further research addressing chronic cancer pain in needed to profile and improve their management.
