Cystic fibrosis and sinonasal disease <b>[Abstract in English]</b>

Abstract

Aims: To make a literature review about the main topics of sinonasal disease in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, focusing mainly on the inflammatory response that occurs on the upper airways of these patients. Source of data: Review of articles published on available journals on Medline database. Summary of findings: Sinonasal disease in CF patients is very common, especially polyposis and chronic rhinosinusitis. An improved understanding of CF and its pathophysiology on a molecular level has resulted in improved medical and surgical management of these patients. The key to the treatment of sinonasal disease in CF patients is in understanding that this is a disease with inflammatory characteristics. Conclusions: Further studies are necessary to better understand the inflammatory mechanisms involved in the genesis of nasal polyps and chronic rhinosinusitis in CF patients, in order to provide a better quality of life for these individuals.
