Abstract

Objective: To present and evaluate that have discovery recentely about physiopathology, epidemilogy and inflammatory aspects involved in atherosclerosis into multidisciplinary perpective.
Source of dates: Bibliographical compilations were accomplished on original articles and revisions published in journals indexed in MEDLINE among 1970 to present that involved related subjects to atherosclerosis.
Synthesis of dates: The revision of suggest that the atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease with strong genetic component, environmental and inflammatory response ageing-related. However, its etyology still is not completely explained.
Conclusion: The understanding of basic biology of the inflammation in atherosclerosis would provide a better clinical support that could alter the way of preventive medicine practice and provide benefice to public health.
