ABSTRACT
The role of ideal-perception consistency in the subjective well-being in intimate relationships Based on the multiple discrepancies theory of Michalos and, indirectly, on the change theory of Thibaut & Kelley, the present research aimed to investigate, in the brazilian milieu, a hypothesis derivated from these theories, that the well-being with intimate relationships, in a great part, depends on the comparison between characteristics of the corrent partner and the characteristics that are desired in an ideal partner (ideal-perception consistency). For such, the research was divided in two parts, whose the first, made with 63 universitarians of both sex, consisted on the attainment of the characteristics used to define the current and the ideal partner and the second, made with 123 female university students, aimed to test the mentioned hypothesis. The results obtainned give support to it: participants who had the greatest ideal-perception consistency in relation to their intimate partners also were the ones who had the greatest well-being in their relationships.
Key words: Subjective well-being; ideal-perception consistency; intimate relationships.
