This article aims to construct an interpretation of the concept of automatism introduced by André Bazin in the essay Ontology of the Photographic Image, using as a privileged comparative framework the historical avant-gardes and their notion of automatic procedure. The objective of this work consists in developing a reading of Bazin's theory of photographic arts that is capable of recognizing in his critical interventions a set of concerns shared by the tradition of the avant-garde regarding automatic creation.
