Aims: to describe the clinical and sociodemographic profile of elderly people with depressive mood disorder.
Methods: cross-sectional study, which covered data from the first consultation of all individuals aged 60 years or older treated at the Geriatric Psychiatry outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital, from 2014 to 2019 and diagnosed with depression. The psychiatric clinical aspects evaluated were the reason for seeking care, presence of any comorbidity, previous psychiatric hospitalizations and diagnosis of depression established based on the DSM-5. The sociodemographic information was age, sex, marital status, education, work activity.
Results: a total of 119 participants diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder were enrolled in the study. The mean age was 70.9±7.4 years and 83.2% were female. Depressive men were mostly in the 70 to 79 age group, while women were younger (60 to 69 years). The youngest elderly with depression were married (52.9%), while the oldest were widowed. Regarding education, the older elderly had fewer years of schooling. A large portion of the elderly with depression had some type of comorbidity (86.4%).
Conclusions: thus, with the aging of the population, knowing it in greater depth becomes a useful tool to better treat it. In addition, the more knowledge we have, the better we can optimize our resources.
