Este artigo examina a sociedade utópica esboçada na Nova Atlântida de Francis Bacon. As interpretações modernas costumam afirmar que ela é, de modo geral, caracterizada por influências cristãs. Essa compreensão é questionada e uma interpretação alternativa é discutida. Bacon emprega um sistema complexo de indicações veladas, símbolos e alusões com "ambigiidades. Isso sugere que não há um único pano de fundo filosófico, religioso ou cultural para sua sociedade utópica. Portanto, eu sustento que a identidade social da Nova Atlântida é baseada num sincretismo intercultural (e, não, numa ideologia predominantemente cristã).
