Knowledge, Abstraction and Power in Dialectic of Enlightenment: a Critical Commentary

This paper discusses critically some concepts concerning the relationship between rationality, abstraction and power, taken in contrast with the notion of mimesis, as conceived by Adorno and Horkheimer in Dialectic of Enlightenment. From the differentiation of four concepts of enlightenment, we demonstrate the inappropriate character of equalization between enlightenment violent and ideological exercise of power, showing how the concept of abstraction, which seems the basis for the first chapter of that work, allows a better delineation of the split between the mimetic forms of knowledge and its successor, taking as its starting point the mythical conception in the ancient Greek.
