Abstract

Ethical issues preclude the use of human subjects in research that is fundamental to the understanding of physiology, as well as for developing new treatments and medical devices. Therefore, the use of animals in research has been crucial to generate new knowledge and treatments for vertebrate organisms. In this issue of Scientia Medica, three articles address the use of animal models for studying diseases. The three papers present important results based on animal models. Again it is demonstrated that the use of animals in biomedical experimentation is crucial. We may give up breeding animals to supply our need and desire to eat meat. However, we can not simply stop using them in biomedical experimentation, because only through the use of these models, we will obtain new important concepts for the treatment of various diseases, prolonging human life with quality.
