Abstract

This study investigated the profile of people involved in cases of violence against women in instances of Maria da Penha Law (n = 103) in 2010, reported in a Civil Police Station in rural Rio Grande do Sul, Brazilian. It was observed that the profile of women is associated to young women (M = 35.8 years; SD = 12.7), most of whom have completed Elementary School (57.7%) and have stable relationships (57.7%). Regarding the forms of violence reported, psychological violence (86.5%) and physical violence (44.2%) were the most prevalent. Regarding the profile of men, mean age was 38.8 years (SD = 11.0), and most have completed Elementary School (48.1%). Substance abuse, especially alcohol, on the part of male perpetrators, was reported in 39.4% of the cases. The results found by this study may support greater understanding of the profiles of the involved in violence against women.
