Digital technologies, Algorithms, Research, Latin AmericaAbstract
Based on gaps and theoretical deviations highlighted in recent diagnoses on research in digital technologies in Latin America, we focus on two axes. We discuss the production of social theorizations based on the materiality of technologies, mainly based on perspective from the hegemonic North. Then, we problematize the weak theoretical influence of authors of Latin American communicational thought, mainly, Martín-Barbero, in this line of research. Finally, we list theoretical and empirical efforts which produce knowledge about digital technologies from Latin America’s context, a demand that is considered urgent. Positioned in the intersections of cultural studies and communication, we argue that the "novelty" of digital technologies and their various interfaces – social, cultural and material – and even the configuration of a new area of studies does not justify the discarding of theories that still demonstrate their strength, specially when they stimulate native thought.
