Abstract

This paper tries to make a brief survey of some incursions of the fictional universe of H. P. Lovecraft in cinema. Creator of a teratological pantheon, varied profane objects and a pessimistic philosophical perspective pointing to the insignificance of the human before a terrifying cosmos, the writer ends up becoming a broad material for film appropriations. While a massive use of lovecraftian elements is gaining larger contours in films with good reviews and box office, the transpositions of the author’s narratives seem to inhabit a more specific niche of films, especially in a scope considered more trash of the audiovisual. Through the study of some authors and some more well-known and emblematic examples, we will demonstrate this strange paradox and we will try to test some possible hypotheses.
