Abstract

Objective: This study aimed at getting to know the seropositive cases of Chagas disease in the west of Santa Catarina state. Materials and Methods: it is a descriptive study which contacted and interviewed, using a semi-structured questionnaire, 15 of a total of 22 people notified as seropositive by the Chapecó´s Health Department – Regional Health Management of Chapecó and São Miguel do Oeste, in the period between 2000 and 2008. Results: Most of the subjects (68,18%) have lived at the urban zone for more than 10 years. All of the seropositives (n=15) have immigrated from the state of Rio Grande do Sul – an endemic state – and travelled to endemic regions. Only one patient revealed chronic phase symptoms. During the visits, searches for triatomines had been conducted, but none were found. Conclusion: The west region of Santa Catarina state is not characterized as a positive region for Chagas disease. Considering the possibility that the seropositive subjects were contaminated in the endemic regions where they had traveled, the existence of autochthonous cases in the west of Santa Catarina is not characterized.
