Operationalizing Transnational Recognition
Reflections on Extensionist Practices Aimed at Migrant Communities

This paper aims to understand, within the paradigm of transnational recognition, how the participation of students in higher education extension activities may contribute to further development of their capacities in perform transformative actions for the social integration of migrants and refugees. To that end, we offer an exploratory reflection on how the participation of students in technical cooperation projects impact their understanding about the role of the internationalist, drawing on the experience of the implementation of a technical cooperation project by a Higher Education Institution. The interaction between students and migrants, through the incorporation of the concept of “mêtis”, contributed to further develop students’ competences in ethics, care and self-care and management in critical contexts, making possible to operationalize actions aimed at implementing transformative remedies to social inequalities and lack of recognition within the framework of technical cooperation projects. Based on this experience, and in the light of critical theory concepts, it was possible to enhance the parameters for the evaluation of international cooperation project management, bringing to notice the recognition of the diversity of knowledge and the critical inquiry on accountability practices in these contexts.
