The decolonization of the Bible, of the “Word of God”: The first and urgent challenge for a decolonial theology
Keywords:
Decolonization, Decolonization of Theology. Bible and Colonialism, Bible and imperialism, Decolonization of the Bible.Abstract
This article aims to contribute in the task on decolonization of the theology, activity considered urgent and necessary. Considering that the colonization of thought influenced all areas of knowledge, this work adds a little more complexity and depth to this task. From a series of references to the decolonization of the social sciences, the recent data of archeology, a critical review of the history of Israel and the history of the writing of the Hebrew Bible itself, affirms that it is also necessary to seek decolonization of the Bible and the related concept of the “Word of God” as well as the dogmas of Inspiration and Revelation. For more recent research makes it clear that much of the biblical texts, especially the Pentateuch, of the Historical and Prophetic Books, was drawn up in alliance with kings and emperors, within projects with imperialist and colonialist nature. At the end, the article suggests that a decolonized and decolonizing reading should seek to formulate a concept of God’s Word more on the function than the source or authority to which the text is allocated.
