A discussion about bilingualism and linguistic prejudice in bilingual populations in southern Brazil

This paper aims at bringing a historical background of studies related to bilingualism in the southern region of Brazil, a country in which it is possible to find several languages in contact. Moreover, it mentions some language policies for immigrants in this country. The research concludes that, from the cognitive perspective, there is no disadvantage in the processing by bilingual individuals if compared to monolinguals and that bilingualism should be encouraged in the country through specific language policies so that the language and the culture of peoples do not get lost.Downloads
