Abstract

This article aims to discuss the memory of the maternal family lineage and its transmission based on the reading of the novel Com armas sonolentas, by the Brazilian writer Carola Saavedra. In this novel, we witness that, in the context of Latin America, this lineage is permeated by losses and ruptures related to the history of colonization and violence on the continent, which are repeated from one generation to the next. It is suggested that a critical reconsideration of the past, which allows an opening towards the present and the future, requires an understanding of the origin from a non-linear temporality. In the novel, this relationship with the origin will occur through a resumption of the first relationships of care, as well as the knowledge of the unconscious that is revealed in sleep and dreams. This will be the path that the characters in the novel will find to construct themselves.

Helena Pillar Kessler, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Doctorate in Social and Institutional Psychology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), and Master's degree in Psychoanalysis: Clinic and Culture from the same university. Member of the Narrative, Memory and Politics research group at UFRGS. Her work and research are in the areas of psychoanalysis, narrative, writing, and gender.

Claudia Luiza Caimi, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics, Philology and Literary Theory and in the Postgraduate Programs in Letters, in the research line Theory, Criticism and Comparative Studies and in the Postgraduate Program in Social and Institutional Psychology, in the research line Clinic, Subjectivity and Politics, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS, Brazil.
