This article aims to analyze El Brasil restituido, a piece by Lope de Vega y Carpio published in 1625. The play deals with Salvador’s historic takeover by the Luso-Spanish army and collects the conflicts between Jews, Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish people. For this, we will propose a relationship between the Spanish domain in Brazil (1580-1640) and the imaginary that this colony provoked in the seventeenth century Iberian Peninsula from stereotypes such as anthropophagy. We will deal, above all, the Jewish question in the Ibero American context, demonstrating how the theme is incorporated into Lope de Vega’s production. At the same time, we’ll place El Brasil restituido within the tradition of Spanish comedy, especially the production of Lope de Vega.
