The South American Misionery Magazin, 1893-1903. The Anglican written and photographic discourse on the construction of the Araucanian Indians

The article aims to explore the dialogue between text and photography in the main medium of the dissemination of the Anglican missionary action in South America, the magazine South America Misionery Magazin, particularly its work in the Araucanía in the ten years since the appearance of the first the photograph. By the very nature of the written production generated by the missionaries, mainly letters that, from 1893, were published, accompanied by the photographs, generally of their authorship, the relevant corpus that allows us to approach this magazine as a container and a producer of a discourse of an “us”, the Europeans, with respect to an “other” that the Mapuches were. A viewer by which the British looked at the geography and subjects that inhabited South America in general and Araucanía in particular, on which British colonial imperialism also arrived, and the letters and the appropriate characteristics to reveal.
