Memory in the Literature of World War II: Narratives as Historical Testimony and Invention

This article addresses the influence of memory in the literature of World War II. By focusing above all on the traumatic memory of German soldiers who subsequently became writers, the article compares the possibilities of narration, which comprises simultaneously a part of historical account, fiction and reorganization – sometimes intentionally, sometimes not – of the writer´s most outstanding memories. The recalling of these actors, persons who do not intend to achieve historical truth, travels across imaginary paths in order to cathartically free them from the traumatic past. In this text we likewise aim to present examples of cases in which the testimony as a personal (and not historical) unconscious reality runs through the narrative so as to build a reality that is faithful to the author and many of his readers.
