Abstract

The unpublished text in Portuguese, Nome de um cão ou o direito natural, brings together the main themes that Levinas’ philosophy deals with, exposed in a subtle way, although combined with a dramatic story - characteristic of the author’s style. His main concern is presented here in its inevitability, but also in its most specific difficulty. It is the discovery of transcendence that motivates thought and action, from philosophy to its assumption as ethics. In this presentation - followed by the translation - it is possible to distinguish and understand three articulations made by Levinas. Firstly, the relationship between war and peace in the constitution of philosophy. Secondly, in the relationship between humanity and animality as it relates to ethics. Finally, in the relationship between past and future as indicative of the ultimate task of both philosophy and ethics.
