Abstract

AIMS: To report a case of intestinal tuberculosis and emphasize the necessity and difficulty of differential diagnosis with colonic cancer. CASE DESCRIPTION: A female patient of 52 years had a colonic lesion diagnosed by colonoscopy and biopsy, suggesting adenocarcinoma. Surgical treatment was performed and the final diagnosis was intestinal tuberculosis. The patient was immunocompetent, and tuberculostatic treatment was indicated. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic and histological preoperative must be interpreted cautiously and always correlated with the clinical context. The differential diagnosis of colonic lesions should include malignant neoplasms and other possible etiologies, such as extra-pulmonary tuberculosis.
